We’re pleased to announce Bates Green Gallop, our popular trail run, will be back for its 7th running in 2024. Bates Green Farm is in Arlington, near Hailsham in East Sussex, and is home to the well-known Bluebell Walk. This run takes you through some beautiful Sussex countryside, through woods, across fields and over the River Cuckmere. Visit our aid station at the end of each lap, do as many 3.6 mile laps as you want in 6 hours.
“A great opportunity to see how far you can go without the pressure of a fixed distance race”
Let us know when you have finished by ringing the bell and we’ll present you with your bespoke medal. If you start your last lap before 3pm, you can finish it. Free tea, coffee and a bite to eat. The event is cup free. Please bring your own bottle, cup or hydration pack to fill up. Carry water if you need it more frequently than every lap.
Bates Green Gallop is a low key, friendly affair limited to around 200 runners.
Because of our commitment to inclusivity Bates Green Gallop has been recognised by a new running community called Everyoneruns.
Everyoneruns challenges the running industry to make a more inclusive community; every run, time, shape, size, distance counts.

Route
***Subject to change***
The course for Bates Green Gallop should be considered a proper trail run! Although it is relatively flat with just a couple of climbs towards the end of the lap, the surface is a mixture of grass (which can be very long), mud, woodland, concrete and loose chippings. Some sections are very uneven, there are tree roots and some low branches! If it has been wet in the week leading up, it may be muddy. We have found over the years that the route can be extremely hard and rutted.
The course will be marked thoroughly, we still recommend you familiarise yourself with the route map. We do not have any fixed marshalling points on the route, as it’s a short lap we send our marshals to walk laps in reverse.
Each lap is 3.57 miles. Due to the nature of the working farms this year’s route means you will need to complete 8 laps for a slightly long marathon (28.56 miles) and 4 laps for a slightly long half marathon (14.28 miles)
As it is on a working farm, animal moo-vement can take place during in the run. We will do our best to inform you of any planned movements in the briefing!
*Route information is subject to change as Bates Green Gallop is on working farms. The route for 2024 is largely the same as 2023. As ever, a preliminary inspection takes place a couple of weeks before, then a final inspection takes place the day before the run.
The route is below. It is best viewed by clicking the title below and choosing OSM outdoor.
Briefing & Information
The run briefing will be a YouTube video uploaded during the week before the event. A short brief with additional information will be given 15 minutes before the start next to start/finish. It is important you listen to the briefing in case of any changes or venue specific information. This event will be held under UK Athletics rules, a permit for this run has been applied for from the Trail Running Association. If you complete marathon distance or further, this run will count towards membership of the 100 Marathon Club.
For 2024, the run will be chip timed. We will still have wristbands for lap counting if you wish to use them but they are no longer compulsory.
Aid Station 💚
***Bates Green Gallop is a cup free event. Please bring your own re-usable cup, bottle or hydration pack. Please bring a mug for hot drinks***
The aid station is near the start/finish, and will typically be stocked with fruit, cake, POTATOES, crisps, nuts, sweets, biscuits, water and squash! You are welcome to bring your own drinks/supplies. The entire aid station is vegan friendly. Product labels are kept as some products are what’s known as “accidentally vegan”.
Bates Green Gallop is not a specifically vegan event, however Rich & Debbie are vegan so nothing makes it on to the aid station that they would not eat!
Finish
At the finish, ring the bell to be awarded with your medal. We all love a good medal, but you can opt to receive an old medal or no medal at all if you prefer.
Please make sure your timing chip has been removed before disappearing. Back at race HQ free unlimited tea and coffee will be available, while you wait for your friends to finish.
